It’s about time…

…that I got this show back on the road!  Anyone missed me?  Anyone noticed I’ve been gone?

Time really does fly doesn’t it!  All that time ago when I was last here I had just got a temporary job working on the UK Census 2011 and as soon as that started I was in a complete whirlwind (or more like a twister, earthquake and avalanche rolled into one) that didn’t let up.  However, I absolutely loved the work and it finished a couple of weeks ago.  I am rather sad that it finished but it did me a lot of good and it was a great experience doing something so different from what I’d done before and it has definitely put me back on the right track!

Back now to job hunting, crochet, time to myself, crochet, catching up with neglected friends and maybe even a bit of housework!  Well, maybe not the last one there!

This is just a quick hello to ease myself back into things.  More will follow with crochet, colour, usual tales of craftiness and of course buttons and tea!  There will always be buttons and tea!!

Catching Up

So there I was getting in a routine of writing here a couple of time a week, then I lost the habit and it’s been a week and half!  Where does the time go?

Anyway, I’ve had a bit of good news this week and I have a job!  It’s only for a couple of months starting mid April but it’s given me a real boost when my confidence work-wise has been quite low because of everything that’s happened in the past few months.  I’m really quite excited about starting work again, doing something a bit different and knowing that if it’s not quite right for me it’s only for a limited time.

And then there’s been my favourite ever bit of crochet!  That’s a big claim I know!!!  In the last 24hours I have completed another element of the crochet club and not only has it been my favourite of the project so far, it is probably the one I’ve enjoyed most ever!  I just love the stitches, colours and overall look of it.  I am easily pleased aren’t I!!

Want a look (the eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted it at the top of the page!!!):

I am now really far behind in the crochet club.  The patterns for March have just been received and I’m just finishing the first month, from January.  I don’t know why i haven’t been getting on with it because when I have been working on it I have really enjoyed it.  No excuses really! Maybe it’s just laziness as I’ve been carrying on with the granny stripe blanket which really doesn’t require much thought.

The best thing about this element of the crochet club – it requries two!!!

The times they are a-changin’

Today is a big day for me, but not necessarily in a good way.  That will hopefully change but I’m still not ready to feel it!  Today is my first day without a job for 18 years, since the summer I left university in fact.

It’s been coming for many months, but as of 15th January I’ve been redundant.  I only found out the previous day that it was actually going ahead as my appeal had been completely rejected!  It’s not a good feeling and it won’t be for a long time.  It doesn’t feel like any sort of relief now that the actual day itself has passed, particularly when it’s not as cut and dried as me leaving and it all being over.  I have many issues about the way its been done and the fairness of it so I will be taking legal advice and probably taking it further.  I can’t say I want to do that but I’ve spent 5 months fighting for my 13 year career with the same organisation and been lied to, undermined and treated very unfairly and unreasonably.  Yes, most of that is my ‘opinion’ but the organisation has policies which have not been followed and in my view that’s just not fair.

It doesn’t help that today is classed as Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year!  Just what I need!

This website was never meant to be about this type of issue, or anything other than craft, tea and cake, but I just feel I had to ‘vent’!

I will have more time on a day to day basis to crochet, see friends and try to get on top of things, but I am a great believer in working for a living if you possibly can and this doesn’t sit well with me at all.

Splurge over!  Next post will be back to normal content!

Welcome 2011…

Are you feeling that anticipation of a fresh, new year starting?  I’d love to say I was but I just can’t get it.  Maybe it will come, maybe not.  I’ve never been the biggest fan of new year.  I tend to think if things are to change then why wait until a landmark date.  The last few months have been pretty tough for me and my family, and will be for a few months yet, so maybe our fresh start will be later in the year.

But until then there is still plenty to do.  There’s always crochet and now that I have more time on my hands I will have more time to do the things I enjoy, which can’t be a bad thing, can it?

So what will I be doing with that time:

  • I have signed up and paid up to be in Jane Crowfoot’s Crochet Club, starting later in January.  I am really excited about this and can’t wait to get started!

  • I am going to finish the granny stripe blanket from which I took an unplanned sabbatical for several months.

  • I want to get more involved in the crochet ‘community’ online.  I already read a lot of sites and blogs but intend to get more active and talkative.

  • Speaking of blogging, I fully intend to have a more regular presence right here.  It’s my place in the crochet community after all, so I plan to use it!

  • I have a Folksy shop account, and I might just open for business.  Being unemployed now I will be glad of any extra funds I can bring in.

  • Oh, I will see if I can find time to get myself a job too!

I hope I see you somewhere along the way!   X X

Starry, starry night!

I really don’t need a new project as I have some Christmas gifts to make for others to give, some for me to give and 2/3 of a granny stripe blanket already on my WIP list.

However, my bestest crochet chum is working on a gorgeous project at the minute that I really want to try.  It’s the Brighton Cowl which just looks so yummy and seasonal that I am having difficulty resisting.  This picture is hers:

Picture from: Hairballs and Hatstands

I need to have a good rummage around my yarn stash (which is really very small!  Honest!!  No, really it is!!) and find a suitable yarn for this project.

I also really like the shape of these stars – I think they would be lovely for Christmas decorations too!

I find myself with some time on my hands at the moment as I’m not in work because I have been really not coping well with the redundancy situation.  I am struggling to do day to day things but I think keeping the crochet going will help keep me sane and active, even it if isn’t getting me out of my pyjamas, the washing done or the bathroom cleaned!

Did you notice that yesterday was the first day I hadn’t posted for ages?  I kind of missed it, after the daily blogging of Blogtoberfet and my holiday.  Maybe the extra time I have will enable me to write regularly too!  I can but try!

Happy Stats (yes, it’s back!)

So it’s been a tough few weeks.  I’m not even going to pretend that I’ve had a happy skippy smiley time and been away having fun.  But a few corners have been turned and myself and others are starting to get back to ‘normal’.

Family wise there are things going on which won’t be over soon.  But it’s these times that remind me why family comes first.  First, last and everything in between actually!  And they always will.

As for work and pending redundancy, well… time will tell.

I wanted to record a few happy things as from the past few days so welcome back to Happy Stats:

  • Having my say!  As part of my redundancy (or any redundancy) there is a consultation period before any final notice is given.  It’s a chance to give feedback on the situation, its impact etc.  Well, I had a lot to say.  Sometime there are advantages of being very pedantic.  I’m a stickler for policy and procedure, but also for fairness.  After several days of crying, I spent the last few weeks researching, thinking and getting my head round things and this past week its all come together into really quite a harsh report that I submitted at work last Friday.  Now that it’s out of my hands I feel a combination of relief and apprehension.  But as I said, time will tell!

  • My new Cath Kidston pillow cases.  They make me smile to myself when I lie my weary head upon them. (Look, you can see them in the pic above!)

  • Preparing a guest post for someone else’s blog!  Ooooooooh, fancy that!

  • Starting to plan my Christmas makes, and receiving orders to make other people’s presents too!

  • Oh Comely magazine!  Fantastic, witty, stylish and quirky. GO BUY IT!  I can’t put it any plainer than that!  (If you read Issue 2 come back and tell me how much you laughed at the article about posting things in the mail!  I cried laughing!)
